Express car body repairs for small, contained damage
Newbridge Accident Repair Centre runs an express line for small car body repairs at its bodyshops in Basildon, Dartford and Sydenham. It fast-tracks cosmetic damage such as scratches, small dents, scuffs and stone chips that doesn't need parts ordering or an insurer's approval. Those are the two things that usually hold a repair up, which is why most express jobs are done in around 48 hours.
What the express line is for
Express car body repairs are for damage that sits on the surface and is limited to a panel or two. The test is practical. Can it be fixed with what's already in the workshop, meaning filler, primer and paint mixed to your colour code? And are you paying for it yourself, so nobody else has to approve the cost? If both answers are yes, it's probably an express job.
Typical examples:
- a scuffed bumper corner from a gatepost or a tight space
- a key scratch or light scrape along one or two panels
- small dents and door dings with the paint unbroken
- stone chips across the bonnet and front bumper
- a scraped mirror cap
How each of those gets repaired, from paintless dent removal to plastic bumper repair, is on our minor car repairs page.
What isn't an express job
Some damage looks small and isn't. These go through the full repair process instead:
- anything structural, or a knock that's changed the panel gaps or the way a door shuts
- any accident where an airbag went off
- damage an insurance engineer needs to inspect before the cost is agreed
- broken lights, cracked brackets or sensors, or anything else that needs parts ordering
- a bumper pushed in hard enough to damage what's behind it
Modern bumpers hide a lot, so if we take one off and find more than the photos showed, we stop, show you, and agree what happens next before carrying on. Should it turn into an insurance job, our accident repairs page explains how that works.
How express car body repairs work, step by step
- Send photos. Use the quote form. One shot from a few steps back so we can see which panel it is, then two or three close-ups from different angles. Daylight is best, because flash bounces off paint and hides scratches.
- Get a quick estimate. We come back with a price and tell you whether it's an express job. If the photos leave questions, we can come and see the car with our mobile estimate service.
- Book a slot. Pick a day that suits you, and we'll tell you when to expect it back.
- Drop it off, or we collect. Bring the car to the nearest branch, or we can pick it up if you're within 20 miles of Basildon or Dartford, or 10 miles of Sydenham.
- The repair. Preparation, repair, paint and polish. Paint has to cure before it can be polished, which is part of why even a small paint job isn't instant.
- Valet and hand back. We valet the car, then you collect it or we bring it back. Look the repair over in daylight, and tell us there and then if anything isn't right.
How long does an express repair take?
Most express repairs are done in around 48 hours. That depends on when the car comes in, and on whether we find extra damage once we start, such as a cracked mounting behind a scuffed bumper. How many panels need paint, and how full the workshop is that week, make a difference too. Polishing out a light scratch is quicker than painting a bumper corner, and a scrape blended across two panels takes longer again. When you book, you'll get a realistic time for your car, not a best case.
Who uses it
People selling a car are the obvious ones, usually with a buyer due to view or a part-exchange appraisal already booked, and a scuffed bumper they'd rather not have to explain.
Lease drivers with a handback date coming up are another. If you've found damage beyond fair wear and tear, express is a quick way to deal with it, and we can check the whole car against your lease company's terms first so you only fix what you'd be charged for. Our lease return repairs page goes into that.
Company car drivers often need a scrape put right before the car goes back to the fleet or on to the next driver. And plenty of people would simply rather not claim on their insurance for a small scuff.
Paying privately or claiming on your insurance
For small damage, paying for the repair yourself often makes more sense than claiming. This is general guidance and your own policy is what counts, but the reasoning usually goes like this.
Your excess comes off first. If the repair costs less than the excess, or not much more, the insurer pays little or nothing towards it.
A fault claim normally cuts your no claims bonus unless you've protected it. Protection keeps the discount, but the premium itself can still rise at renewal after a claim.
Insurers also ask about previous claims when you renew or switch, usually going back several years, so a small claim can follow you around for a while.
Damage someone else caused is a different matter. If another driver was at fault, the cost should come from their insurer, not from you, and our page on non-fault accident claims explains how we handle that. If another vehicle was involved at all, most policies expect you to tell your insurer about the incident even if you don't claim, so check yours.

Questions
01What counts as an express repair?
Small, cosmetic damage on one or two panels that we can fix without ordering parts or waiting for an insurer to approve the cost. Typical examples are a scuffed bumper corner, a light scrape along a door, small dents with the paint unbroken and stone chips on the bonnet. Send us photos and we'll tell you whether yours qualifies.
02Can I just turn up for an express repair?
It's better to send photos first. That way we can check it's an express job, give you a price and book you a slot, so the car isn't sitting around when you arrive. If you're nearby and want a quick opinion, ring the branch before you come so someone is free to look at it.
03Should I claim on my insurance for a small scuff?
Usually not, though it depends on your policy. If the repair costs about the same as your excess, claiming gains you little, and a fault claim can reduce your no claims bonus and push up your premium. If someone else caused the damage, that's different: the cost can be recovered from their insurer instead.
04What happens if you find more damage once the bumper is off?
We stop and tell you before doing anything else. A knock that only scuffed the paint can still crack the brackets, sensors or reinforcement behind a bumper. We'll show you what we've found and explain what it means for the price and the timing, and you decide. Sometimes it moves the job out of the express line.
05Is an express repair done to the same standard as a full repair?
Yes. Express describes the size of the job and how it's scheduled. The preparation, painting and polishing are the same steps any of our repairs go through; a small repair just has less of each to do, and it doesn't sit waiting for parts or an insurer's go-ahead.
06Do you do express repairs on lease and company cars?
Yes, as long as the damage fits the express criteria. Lease and company cars usually come with a deadline, such as a return date or a fleet inspection, so send photos as early as you can to leave room to book a slot. On a lease car, it's worth having the whole car looked over at the same time.
