What is smart repair, and what can it fix?
Smart repair is a way of fixing small areas of paint and bodywork damage, such as a bumper scuff, a scratch or a stone chip, without repainting the whole panel. SMART stands for Small to Medium Area Repair Technique. The work is kept to the damaged patch and blended into the paint around it, so it usually takes less time and costs less than a full panel respray.
It suits a lot of everyday damage, but not all of it. At Newbridge Accident Repair Centre we do smart repairs at all three of our sites, and part of the job is telling people when a panel needs painting properly instead.
How a smart repair is done
The steps are close to a normal bodyshop paint repair, on a smaller area:
- The damaged area is cleaned and degreased, and the surrounding panels and trim are masked off.
- The damage is sanded back. Deeper scratches and chips are filled and flatted until the surface is level.
- Primer goes on, then the colour coat, which is mixed to your car's paint code and checked against the panel.
- The colour is faded out into the surrounding paint so there's no hard edge.
- Clear lacquer goes over the top, and once it's cured the area is polished to match the shine of the rest of the panel.
Where it differs is the size of the area. A conventional repair would usually paint the whole bumper or door. A smart repair works on a patch around the damage, so there's less to prepare and paint, and the car spends less time with us.
What damage is smart repair good for?
It works best on damage that's small and stays within one panel. Typical jobs:
- scuffed bumper corners from parking
- scratches from keys, bikes or hedges, including ones that have gone through to the primer
- stone chips on the bonnet and front bumper
- scraped door edges
- small dents where the paint has cracked, once the dent itself has been dealt with
- painted wing mirror covers and trim
There's no fixed size limit. The smaller and more contained the damage, the better the result, and once a scratch runs most of the length of a panel you're close to painting the whole thing anyway.
When smart repair isn't the right fix
Sometimes the conventional repair is the better one, and we'd rather tell you than do a smart repair that shows. That's usually the case when:
- the damage runs across two or more panels, like a scrape along a door and into the rear wing
- a dent is deep or sharp, or sits on a swage line (the crease pressed into the panel), which is hard to reshape neatly
- a plastic bumper is split, torn or pushed in, or the clips and brackets behind it are broken
- there may be damage behind the panel, to parking sensors, lights or the crash structure
- the damage is in the middle of a big flat panel such as a bonnet or roof, where a blend line is harder to hide, particularly on metallic and pearl paint
If a knock has set off a warning light, or a door or boot no longer shuts the way it did, treat it as accident damage rather than a cosmetic job.
Is smart repair the same as paintless dent removal?
No, though people often mix them up. Paintless dent removal is for dents where the paint hasn't cracked. The metal is worked back into shape from behind the panel, or pulled from the front, and no paint is needed. It suits small, shallow dents like car park door dings, and works less well on sharp creases or dents near a panel edge.
Smart repair deals with paint damage, and with dents where the paint has broken. Some jobs need both: the dent comes out first, then the cracked paint over it is smart repaired.
How long does a smart repair take?
Less time than a full panel repair, because less of the car needs preparing and painting. At Newbridge, small jobs like this go through our express repairs line, which fast-tracks minor damage. Most express jobs take around 48 hours, depending on when the car comes in and whether we find any extra damage once we start.
If you've got a few marks around the car, have them done in one visit. It's quicker than booking them one at a time, and the painter can check the colour across all of them together.
Will anyone be able to tell?
On a good smart repair, not without looking closely. Solid colours are the most forgiving. Metallic and pearl paints take more work. The flakes in the paint need to settle the way they did at the factory, or the repaired patch catches the light differently, and that comes down to how the paint is sprayed. Our guide to how car paint colour matching works explains why some colours are trickier.
A touch-up pen is a different thing altogether. It can stop a stone chip rusting, but it can't be blended, and on a scratch it usually shows. For bigger paintwork, such as a full panel respray, see our car paint repairs page.

Questions
01Is a smart repair permanent?
It should be. A properly done smart repair uses primer, colour and clear lacquer, the same layers as a full panel repair, so it wears like the paint around it. Problems come from rushed work: poor preparation can let the repair lift, or leave a faint ring around the edge that shows up later. If a repair of ours gives you trouble, bring it back to us.
02Can smart repair fix a dent?
Small ones, yes. If the paint over the dent has cracked, the dent is pulled or filled and the area is then smart repaired. If the paint is unbroken, paintless dent removal may do the job with no painting at all. Large dents, sharp creases and dents on a panel edge or swage line usually need a conventional bodyshop repair.
03Is smart repair worth doing before selling a car?
Often, yes. Buyers and part-exchange valuers notice scuffed bumpers and scratched doors, and a small repair can cost less than the amount they'd knock off the price for it. It isn't worth it on every car: on an older, low-value car the repair might cost more than it adds. Send us photos and we'll price it so you can decide.
04Can I get a smart repair on a lease car before handing it back?
Yes, and it's a sensible step if a scuff or scratch falls outside the return standard. The BVRLA fair wear and tear guide accepts surface scratches of up to 25mm, up to four per panel, as long as no primer or bare metal is showing. Anything bigger or deeper is likely to be charged, so compare our price with the lease company's charge.
05Does smart repair work on plastic bumpers?
Yes. Painted plastic bumpers are one of the jobs it suits best, because corner scuffs are usually small and contained. Bare plastic needs the right primer so the paint keys to it properly. If the bumper is split or torn, or its mounting clips are broken, it needs a proper bumper repair or a replacement instead.
